Seniors
Today, older adults are more health conscious than ever before. That is why the Y offers water exercise, a variety of land-based exercise classes, volunteer opportunities, and social events. Our senior programs are designed for men and women in their 50s and older to promote fitness and well-being while fostering friendships and camaraderie. Our volunteer opportunities and social events help build lasting relationships and community ties that last a lifetime.
Benefits of Starting an Active Lifestyle Today
Some people may wonder what the difference is between physical activity and exercise. Physical activities are activities that get your body moving such as gardening, walking the dog and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Exercise is a form of physical activity that is specifically planned, structured, and repetitive such as weight training, stretching techniques, or an aerobics class. Including both in your life will provide you with health benefits that can help you feel better and enjoy life more as you age.
- Exercise reduces risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers.
- Physical activity helps reduce pain. Keep moving!
- Exercise helps increase muscular strength, flexibility and balance.
- Physically activity and exercise help to manage stress and improve your mood.
- Physical Activity + Exercise = Better quality of life!
WELLNESS ORIENTATIONS
To help get you comfortable, a member of the YMCA staff will show you the ropes of our facility and exercise equipment. If desired, they can tailor workout sessions for your individual needs and experience. Plus, our certified health coach will sit down and help formulate a personal plan for reaching your overall wellness goals.
Water Exercise
Come on in, the water’s fine! Adults looking to challenge themselves without stress on their joints or members who just enjoy the water can take advantage of our different water exercise classes. Instructors lead small groups through water aerobics, core strengthening and much more. You will gain muscle conditioning and cardiovascular endurance from the aerobic choreography and the resistance of the water. It is ideal for all fitness levels & non-swimmers. Water Exercise classes are FREE for Y members!
